Bancinsurance Corporation Announces Second Quarter Results

COLUMBUS, Ohio, August 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Bancinsurance Corporation , a specialty property and casualty insurance holding company, today announced its financial results for the three and six months ended June 30, 2007.

John Sokol, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President, stated, "Overall market conditions remained sluggish throughout the second quarter of 2007. Higher net premiums earned for other specialty products, and, to a lesser extent, creditor placed insurance and unemployment compensation products, partially offset a 16% decline in premiums earned for ULTIMATE LOSS INSURANCE(R), our largest product, compared to the same period last year. Our results in future periods will continue to be impacted by changes that occurred in our lender/dealer product line during the past two years, coupled with lending volumes of financial institution customers and ongoing efforts to improve profitability."

Second Quarter Results

Net income was $1.0 million, or $0.20 per diluted share, for the second quarter 2007 compared to $1.4 million, or $0.28 per diluted share, a year ago.

Ohio Governor Names 11 to New Board of Workers Comp Bureau

Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland named 11 new non-legislative directors to oversee the state's scandal-marred Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation, the state's insurance fund for injured workers that has been mired in controversy.

The independent board was created after an investment scandal that resulted in the convictions on ethics violations of former Gov. Bob Taft and others.

The independent, external board of directors will serve as the primary fiduciary entity of BWC funds and be held accountable for the bureau's operations.

"The establishment of an independent board of directors brings us a step closer to restoring confidence and accountability in the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation,'' Strickland said in a statement. "The new board will ensure greater professional expertise and strengthened fiscal management of BWC funds.''

William Lhota, president and chief executive of the Central Ohio Transit Authority, will chair the panel.

The pride of Carroll has major dreams

"Mike's now playing every day, and now you're dealing with travel after night games, and playing day games after night games. It is a grind. But I think Mike understands what he has to do to become successful and reach that higher level."

Against the Harrisburg Senators over the weekend, Costanzo showed some versatility he had not often exhibited in the first half of the season. He stroked a bloop, opposite-field RBI single in the sixth inning that tied the score 1-1 in a 6-1 victory.

That at-bat came after Costanzo struck out on four pitches.

"Mike has a great mental attitude," Gross said. "He can forget a bad game and put it behind him, and that doesn't affect how he approaches the next game. Now, going from one at-bat to the next may need a little work, but it's coming around.
